Lahaina was once the capital of Hawai’i, and a bustling harbor town that saw upwards of 400 whaling ships per day. It is now a favorite Maui destination for its wonderful beaches–great for surfing and snorkeling–and its lively downtown area littered with boutique shops, restaurants, and museums.

Since Lahaina is on the dry side of the island, we’ll visit some more exotic locations along the way, including a sacred burial ground and a heritage park tucked high in the West Maui Mountains, lush botanical gardens, and a beautiful plantation property. Your day will be complete with the best of Maui, including beaches, mountains, gardens, dining, shopping, and numerous photo opps!

Your Road to Lahaina tour includes:

  • Iao Valley – Tour botanical gardens and explore the State Park and swimming holes at Maui’s notorious burial ground and battle site
  • Maui Tropical Plantation – gardens galore, pineapple farm, Maui coffee, zipline, restaurant and lagoon
  • The most popular attractions in old Lahaina town
  • Great swimming/snorkeling beaches with frequent turtle sightings
  • Souvenir shopping at Front Street boutiques and Maui Outlet Mall
  • The most picturesque coast on Maui–white sand, turquoise water!

Lahaina Tour

The West Side of Maui boasts some of the most picturesque, deserted white-sand beaches in the Pacific Ocean! But since Lahaina is on the dry side of the island, we’ll kick off our day with some tropical variety in the form of dramatic mountains and lush gardens. We’ll start in Kahului and head straight for the hills, then work our way to Old Lahaina Town on the island’s West Side.

Iao Valley is known for its mild temperatures, deep canyons, and abundant island plantlife. At 1,500 feet above sea level, you will be surrounded by lush greenery and rugged mountains. Step back in time to ancient Hawai’i, when this valley was the burial ground kings, queens, kahunas, and others of royalty. We’ll tour the Kepaniwai Heritage Park, a garden-park that commemorates the different cultures which make up the Islands. Hawai’i was once called the “Melting Pot of the Pacific,” attracting many in search of a better life. Then, explore the trails, watering holes, gardens, and lookouts at Iao Valley State Park. Once kapu (taboo) to all but Hawaiian royalty, visitors can now marvel at the unforgiving cliffs which house our ancestors’ mana (spirits), which are believed to live on in their bones. Marvel at Iao Needle– standing at 1,200 feet, taller than the Eiffel Tower, it is considered the phallic stone of Kanaloa, god of the ocean. This lava remnant was used as a lookout point by Maui warriors.

Our next stop is the Maui Tropical Plantation, in a little place called Waikapu, which means “forbidden water” due to the streams flowing down from the sacred mountains and burial grounds above. You’ll learn about many of the island plants including pineapple (grown on-site!), papaya, apple-banana, and dragon fruit. These landowners also operate the highest zipline in all of Maui, so if you’re feeling adventurous, take a zip through the trees and soar above the plantation! This spectacular property is also home to the Mill House, a farm-to-table restaurant that mixes up some of the island’s best cocktails using their own fruit as garnishes! The Tropical Plantation also makes their own ice cream, which is absolutely delicious, and they brew Maui-grown coffee. One could spend all day exploring this beautiful plantation, but you still have a big day ahead. Next stop, Lahaina!

On the way to Lahaina, the coastal views are too good to pass up. We’ll stop for photos of Ma’alaea Harbor and the island of Kaholawe, where Hawaiian Humpback Whales come to breed and nurse their young every winter. Next, the West Maui coastline has some of the prettiest beaches on the planet, with beautiful sights around every corner. Once in Lahaina, we’ll work with you to create your ideal beach day. You’ll have multiple beaches to choose from, whether you want to swim, snorkel, or just relax. Want to learn more about Hawaiian history? The Baldwin Museum, the Wo Hing Temple, Lahaina Heritage Museum, and Hale Pa’ahao Prison are only a few of the many options for history buffs. If you’re looking for the perfect Maui souvenir, or just love window-shopping, Lahaina has more than enough to satisfy. The lively downtown area is littered with boutique shops, restaurants, and museums. Looking to wet your palate? Kahola Brewery in Lahaina crafts the best beers on the island, and is a refreshing way to round out a big day of exploring and touring! The West Side of the island is the best side to catch a Hawaiian beach sunset, and that’s exactly where you’ll be. Sit back and enjoy the ride on a Hula Hula Hopper private tour!

UpCountry Tour

We kick off the tour at sea level, and head straight for the town of Paia, deemed one of America’s best small towns. Paia is so small that if you blink, you might miss it. This old plantation town, which evolved into a mecca for surfers, windsurfers, and hippies, might make you feel like you’re stepping back into the 1960’s, from dreadlocks to tie dye shops this is a place to see. Fabulous boutique shops, art galleries, and some of Maui’s best restaurants line the intersection of Hana Hwy and Baldwin Ave, where it’s not uncommon to run into music and movie stars like Willie Nelson, Gene Simmons, Jim Carrey, and Owen Wilson. Town center is just one block from Paia Bay, a great place to swim on days with small waves, so if you’re looking for a sun-and-salt-water fix to start your day, you’re in luck! After Paia, we’ll ascend the lower slopes of Haleakala volcano. Our second stop will be Hali’imaile, home to Maui’s last commercial Pineapple plantation. Maui Gold pineapples are the sweetest pineapples! The plantation also features delightful art galleries, a beautiful property, and a vodka distillery– Pau Vodka is distilled from pineapples! Then we’ll travel through the old paniolo town (cowboy town) of Makawao, and explore cute shops and gorgeous galleries featuring Maui-made arts and crafts. Makawao means “eye of the forest,” with great island views from the edge of the woods. This is where Oprah lives! As we leave the cool, walkable town of Makawao, we’ll head to the lush high-country of Kula, and the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm. This is arguably one of the most beautiful places on the island, a botanist’s dream with views as far as the eye can see. Surrounded by dense plant life at 4,000 feet above sea level, you’ll be dazzled by the panoramic views of the Valley Isle below.
